How to Save on Lighting for Your Business

One of the easiest ways to save your company energy and money is switching to more energy efficient light bulbs like light emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which use nearly 75% less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs, and last more than 15 times longer.

Here are a few other small steps you can take to save your business big money:

  • Turn off lights when not in use. Turn off outdoor lighting during daytime.
  • Use task lighting and take advantage of natural daylight indoors.
  • Do not "over-light." It’s expensive and can cause eyestrain, headaches and glare.
  • Replace old lighting equipment with new technologies that need fewer fixtures and/or fewer lamps within existing fixtures while keeping the same light levels.
  • Buy fixtures that have dimmers, allowing you to manually adjust the intensity of the light. Most lights use less electricity at lower settings, so you’ll only pay for the light you need.
  • Install sensors that automatically shut off lights when no one is around.
  • Install LED exit signs.
  • Clean light fixtures regularly. Dust build-up greatly diminishes the light output of a fixture.
  • Replace any yellowed or hazy lenses and diffusers twice a year.
  • Install an energy management system (EMS) to control lighting systems automatically.
